THE CORONAVIRUS Last week we announced and implemented stage two of the diocesan response to the Coronavirus emergency, including finding supplies of the Alcoholic Hand Gel we have been asked to make available wherever possible. It has been in the porch since Tuesday, and I ask you to make use of it. There will, however, be people at Mass this weekend who were not there last week, so I have made available in the porch copies of the letter from the Bishop that was on the back of the bulletin last weekend. So, if you have not read it, please make a point of doing so. Different dioceses in Scotland have issed slightly different guidelines, but here in Galloway we are following the guidelines of the English and Welsh Bishops’ Conference.
THE S.C.I.A.F. ANNUAL APPEAL This takes place every year on the 4th Sunday of Lent, which is next weekend. I meet people who find it odd that there should be two appeals each Lent, one through the boxes and one through the special collection, and I can understand this. The need, however, is great, and I have no doubt you will be your usual generous selves in both cases.
THE LENTEN PENANCE SERVICEThis will take place on Wednesday 8th April, the Wednesday of Holy Week. In that sense it marks the end of our period of preparation and the beginning of the Holy Week Services
THE FILM NIGHTS This event is being CANCELLED due to the situation with the virus. Thank you to those who worked so hard to make the films available and hopefully you will see them appear again next year.
PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL The first of two planned meetings took place on Wednesday, and, despite a number of apologies, the future looks bright provided that everyone plays their part. Sadly, however, the second of the two meetings, planned for March 31st, has now been CANCELLED due to the virus.
EMBRACING CHANGE: SPIRITUALITY GROUP This group is one of several groups which form part of the Embracing Change Process, a newsletter about which you received very recently. The purpose of this particular group is to help create a shared spiritualty among the parishes of North Ayrshire which recognizes our unity and our dependence of each other. The group has arranged a whole series events over the last few years designed to help us embrace this way of thinking with some success, but we have a long way to go. So far we have had Holy Hours each year around Lent/Easter, a Pentecost Walk, A Deanery Retreat, a Family Fun Day with picnic, Film Nights along with talks and sessions on Pope Francis’ documents The Joy of the Gospel and Rejoice and be Glad. So would you consider being part of this group? The next meeting is here in St Bride’s on Tuesday 14th April at 7.00.p.m.
MINISTRIES AT MASS In the next week or two the new lists for the ministries at Mass will appear. It is some time since I used this occasion to make an appeal for more volunteers, but I am doing that again now. Mass is an action of the whole community and this becomes more and more visible the more people are actively involved. Many of you could easily act as Readers, Eucharistic Ministers ( suspended at the moment) bring up the gifts and even sing the psalm. This happens in many parishes, but so far we have not managed to get anyone to do it here. So please think about this and maybe have a word with James Mongomery who makes up the rota.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS I am grateful to the parishioner who has provided a number of copies of SCIAF’S version of the Stations of the Cross. These are now available inside the front door of the church. So please feel free to take one and use it for prayer.
A LENTEN IGNATIAN RETREATThis is available from the Ignatian Spirituality Centre (ISC) at www.iscglasgow.co.uk You will find it, not surprisingly, under Lenten Retreat. Ideally this would be done in a group, but there is no reason why an individual should not use the material during Lent or at any other time. I strongly recommend it and there are copies of the booklet that goes with it, entitled Journey into Freedom, available on the table at the back of the church. So please feel free to take one or more. Even at this stage, some of you may choose to come together as a group.
A LENTEN CARMELITE RETREAT I am grateful to the person who has drawn this alternative retreat to my attention, based on the Carmelite rather than the Ignatian tradition. Its full title is Lent 2020 with the Prophet Elijah. The idea is to undertake a forty day walk through the desert and you can find it at Hozan.org: https:/hozana.org/t/8v4xt. My understanding is that to subscribe you should click on “I join” – sounds simple enough – and they will send you the necessary material.
FOUR TALKS ON THE GOSPELS IN 2020 These will be delivered by Fr Mark Kelly, parish priest of Dalry, Kilbirnie and Beith, and the first of them was supposed to be in Kilbirnie on Tuesday 24th March at 7.00.p.m.Given the current situation with the virus, however, this meeting has been CANCELLED and will take place sometime later in the year. The second one is scheduled for Largs on the 28th May, so hopefully that one will go ahead as planned. But we shall see
