AWAY THIS COMING WEEK This Sunday afternoon I hope to drive down to Lytham for ten days, hoping to be back on either Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. This means there will be no morning Mass for the next fortnight, but, if you really want to go to Mass, there are plenty of opportunities locally. There will, of course be Mass next weekend, celebrated by Fr Eamonn Flynn. Tom Paterson, of course has retired from his duties on these occasions and I am very grateful to Malcolm Milne for agreeing to take his place. Barring unforeseen circumstances, this should be the last time I am away before retiring. If a priest is required in an emergency, please phone Fr Willie Boyd on 279130.
A TENTH ANNIVERSARY LUNCH Before I go on Sunday I am looking forward to attending a lunch in the Waterside Hotel to mark the tenth anniversary of the coming together of what were St Andrew’s and Overton Churches to form West Kilbride Parish Church. In doing this, of course, I am representing all of you and am very happy to do so.
REJOICE AND BE GLAD. This is the subject of the 2020 Adult Education series for the diocese. It is based on the Pope’s document about holiness in the modern world called Gaudete et Exultate (rejoice and be glad) and will consist of six monthly meetings. I had hoped we might have a group here, but no interest has been shown. There is, however, a group meeting in Stevenston, starting on Wednesday 28th January, (7-8.p.m.) You would be made very welcome at it and, if you would like to go, please phone 097979542319
HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE 2020 From October 12th this year, for seven nights, there will be another Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The cost per person, sharing, will be £1,545. This will include four nights in Bethlehem and three nights in Tiberias. Return flights will be fron Manchester and if you are interested in being part of this, please contact Joe Walsh Tours on 0141 530 5060. There is a poster in the porch and I have some booking forms.
CROSSHOUSE AND AYR HOSPITALS “If you, or any member of your family is going into Ayr or Crosshouse Hospital and would like to reecive a visit and/or Holy Communion, please contact me, Deacon Bill Corbett (the RC chaplain), on 01292 521208.”
There was a time when hospital staff were trained about the spiritual needs of patients, but this, as I know from recent experience, not always the case now. As well as the chaplain who makes routine visits, there is always a priest on call for emergencies. He can be paged at any time of the day or night and the staff should know this. Sadly, they sometimes don’t.
RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT This is a delicate matter to say anything about. I have known a number of people who have had abortions and am well aware how different the experience can be. For some, it is a traumatic event, and for others not. This retreat – about which I have no personal knowledge - is designed for those in the former category and may or may not be of help to you or to someone you know. It takes place in Glasgow on Tuesday 11th – Thursday 13th February. For more information, please call or text Sister Andrea on 07816942824.
NEXT MEETING FOR PARENTS Just to remind you that the proposed date for the next meeting for parents is currently Tuesday 11th February. Please let me know if there is any problem with this date.
THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION You are all welcome to come along to St Peter’s on 4th February and provide support to the boys. Sometimes, coming from a smaller parish like St Bride’s, they can feel a bit overwhelmed by the crowd, so it would be nice if we were gathered around them that evening.
